Snowboarding got its start in 1965 in Muskegon, Michigan. That winter, an engineer named Sherman Poppen attached two skis together with a rope for steering, creating a new winter toy called a "snurfer" for his daughters. In the 1970s, he began to organize competitions, attracting the attention of many snowboarding pioneers including a young Tom Sims, who would go on to create Sims Snowboards, and Jake Burton Carpenter, who founded Burton Snowboards. While there was some struggle before snowboarding was accepted, it has now become a popular winter sport and recreational activity.
