This breed originated in South Carolina around 1900, when a stray Spaniel followed a banker named Alexander White home. After seeing that the dog good for retrieving, he sent it to his friend, a hunter named Whit Boykin, who began trying to breed more dogs like the stray. The breed was named after the Boykin family. In South Carolina, the Boykin Spaniel has its own holiday, Boykin Spaniel Day, celebrated on September 1st and is one of only a few breeds that originated in the United States. They are social, energetic and easy to train. They are also quite good with children, making them an ideal family pet.
