Thanksgiving Day is a holiday in which blessings are celebrated and marks the beginning of the Holiday Season in North America. Days of Thanksgiving can trace their origins to 16th century England, when the Puritans had Days of Fasting for troubled times and Days of Thanksgiving in times of blessing. These celebrations were carried to North America when Europeans immigrated. Though there has been debate concerning the first official Thanksgiving holiday, the first nationwide observance of a Day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed by George Washington on November 26th, 1789. Abraham Lincoln would later make Thanksgiving an official national holiday and Franklin Roosevelt would make the official observance date the 4th Thursday in November. While it was originally intended as a day of thanks for a bountiful harvest, it is celebrated today by giving thanks for all of the blessings we have received throughout the year. This Give Thanks Mailbox Cover is a great reminder that we should be thankful at all times for the things that we have.
