Valentine's Day originated to honor the lives of a number of martyrs by the name of Valentine. However, the most popular legend is of a priest that lived during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Claudius II. Because of Saint Valentine's ministry, he was imprisoned and executed, but not before healing Claudius' daughter of blindness and leaving her a note signed, "Your Valentine." Some versions of the legend also say that he would cut out heart shaped papers and give them to persecuted Christians as well as Roman soldiers as a reminder of God's love as well as their own wedding vows. While the original celebration of Valentine's Day was in honor of several saints, it was Geoffrey Chaucer's poetry that began shaping the holiday into a celebration of love and romance. In the 18th century, it came to be as we know it today, where couples express affection by giving gifts and cards.
