The earliest use of a heart as a symbol of love was with a miniature painting from the 13th century manuscript Roman de la poire. In the painting, a young man offers his heart to a young woman. At the time, the heart was depicted as more of a pear or a pinecone shape. One end of the heart became gradually more indented over time until it came to appear as it does today.
